This morning at around 3:00am, I was dispatched to the Pontchartrain Yacht Club in Mandeville in reference to an alarm activation coming from the rear door of the business. When I arrived on the scene I checked the bottom exterior of the business with my flashlight, before going up the stairs to check the rest of the building. When I got upstairs at the back door, I pulled on the door and found it to be unlocked. Because I am a very safe officer, I closed the door and decided to wait until my back-up unit arrived to check the interior of the business. As soon as I closed the door, I immediately heard a male's voice say "Hey There!" and then what sounded like a crowd of people talking in muffled voices coming from behind me. When I turned around, I didn't see anyone standing there. Thinking that someone could have been inside of the building, I got on the radio and requested other back-up units to assist with the building search. When the other units arrived on the scene we did an interior search of the building and did not find anyone inside. While doing the search of the interior, I checked the restrooms and noticed a heavy smell of cigar smoke coming from inside of the women's restroom. I searched the restroom, but could not find the source of the smell. Another officer who was searching the kitchen area, also found a waffle maker that was on. I know that someone may have accidentally left the waffle maker on, but could not explain the voices or the cigar smell in the restroom.
The Pontchartrain Yacht Club was established in 1967, and was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. It was later rebuilt at the same location as it is now. It is possible that the spirits of past members are haunting the new yacht club because they are upset that their old club was destroyed in the storm. Just food for thought.
