It's a fascinating subject, no doubt. We just have to first start w/ explainable science/ misperceptions, and these misperceptions can be difficult to ferret out when it's happening to you, in your home. Sometimes it's something that can be hard to detect, such as infrasound, and sometimes, it's just a door or drawer that will open by itself, and do that many times only under certain cricumstances, as when the air conditioner kicks on, resulting in a series of events causing a baby bed to "move".
We've all had it happen. I think Jenn wil agree w/ me, that when we are on duty, looking into reported in events in the home of another, find phenomena we can't explain is one thing. However, when we as investigators, are in our own home, "off duty", and something happens that we can't explain, even when we kick into "full investigation' mode, the resulting feelings are different. It's not that we don't have feelings for the client, it's just, like the client, we tend to take it more 'personal". It takes adjusting. It's hard to drop the personal feelings to study the phenomena professionally and dispassionately at home. But, it can be quite fascinating.

A very thoughtful question, often asked. I don't have the answer, and I will venture the guess no one else does either, and many will feel uncomfortable in admitting they don't know, even if they are supposed to be "specialists in the field". The Bible was written for and given to Mankind. It applies to us and our immortal souls, and the preparation for salvation. It was not intended for elephants, manta rays, eels, or dinosaurs. I don't feel the omission of these really affects the message or its intent. Also, time as we know it, was developed by man, as a point of reference for past, present, or future events. What is time to an Immortal Being, and how do they properly convey it to us? We base everything on the earth's rotation, and its annual trip around the sun. The messages given to man to record had to pass through our filters and concepts, to write and record as best we could understand. The musunderstanding, in any, and the faults therein, belong only to us in our limitations. The intended and important portion of the message is there. To me, it doesn't really matter if the message was delivered from the top of a mountain, the middle of a field, or the front of a pulpit. Or, the time of day, year, from what calendar, or in what manner. All that really matters is The Message.

I think that some ghost hunters will go into some homes promising to get a spirit to leave. Personally, I think that's too much of a promise to make, and one that no one can guarantee to keep. On the part of the amatuer hunter, it's often made too "pridefully".
On many of the investigations that I have participated in over the years, and again personally, I believe the NO. 1 question is not really "Is there something happening?", but "Am I crazy?". Sometimes, it takes the client a while to get the real concern out in the open, and some courage to question their own state of mind, and the validity of their perceptions, to someone they just met. This creates a real dilemma, which can only be met with scientific investigations, and the truth, as the investigator believes it, at the time of testing, in the places tested. Even if it takes multiple research efforts. 1. If nothing is found, at the time of testing, in the places tested, the client may feel that the fears of mental imbalance have proven true. 2. If evidence of a presence is found, how will the client react? So, the real job is not "finding something". It's helping the client to cope with whatever is there or not there. If tangible evidence of a basis for false perceptions, such as a high EMF field, infrasound, high positive ion count, or even a loose, banging water pipe, the client can still feel "not crazy". This "not crazy" allows the client to regain control of themselves, their lives, and be a part of the family unit again. Counseling is more important than the best digital recorder, sound analysis program, or the newest K-2 meter. The investigator, armed with a basic knowledge of human needs and psychology, however, should recognize the need, and recommend it, when true professional counseling is the better choice.
The best information that can be given to the normal client is not "I found something!!", but, "No, you aren't crazy". THEN, have a reasonable, logical explanation for the assertation.

If you would like to get a headstart, you could probably get lots of online info by a search on "Maimonides Dream Laboratory", founded about 1962. If I remember correctly, Ullman helped to get this launched.

Dreams have been spectulated about for about as long as there have been dreams. There have been dream studies conducted in parapsychology in the more recent times. Many involved watching the subject (asleep) until REM movement of the eye set in, then having a distant individual concentrate on sending the image of a particual object to the sleeper. When REM movement ceased, the sleeper was woke up and questioned about dreams, w/o the questioner mentioning the specific object, which in most cases, the questioner did not know. The results were statistically significant. And, of course, between 2 individuals (or more), communication is a two-way process.

There are about as many theories and explanations of EVP as there are EVP samples. Back when the EVP phenomenon was first discovered, research was pretty carefully conducted. When recorders were used, the cassette tapes were often listened to, blank, out of the package, prior to recording sessions. Tapes that had been in the room where sessions had been conducted earlier, but had been in sealed packages, often contained EVP before ever being placed in a recorder for session purposes, some form of direct imprint. The recorder isn't always necessary. BUT, I would speculate on dimished over-all quantity.
Also, much of the early EVP was gathered using a "Raudive's Box", plugging it into the recorder, no microphone. The box was primarily a short antenna, 4-5 inches, connected to a tightly wound wire coil, and fed through a diode/resistor set up. Got results w/ no microphone here either. Questions had to be written down. Outside noise, human voices, etc., didn't "make the trip". This led to the argument is was all AM radio signals, with the diode being the offending part. The Raudive's box was essentially the same as a crystal radio, except crystal radios, to work as such, need about 50'+ of wire for an antenna.
Alexander McRae, a NASA communications expert/consultant tackled this issue. He went to Spain for about two weeks where there would be many Spanish radio stations, and recorded EVP there for the two weeks, and got another anomaly. NO Spanish, but 100% English. EVP is almost always in the language(s) spoken by the gatherer. This is where the subconscious argument began. That still doesn't explain the "hidden knowledge" aspect of much EVP.
All of Raudive's thousands of EVP's are in the four languages he spoke, but most in his native tongue. So, more mystery. The theory is that if you ask someone something in your native tongue, and the listener doesn't understand the language, or know for a fact that you ARE speaking directly to them, why should they answer? Among others, but that one is simple, and based on human nature. Then, someone points out that EVP isn't always answers, but comments about what is said, THEN, how can you comment about something if you don't know what is said?? It's fun, and promotes the thinking process.

It's messages of this type that, in gereral, cast doubt on the theory that 100% of all EVP originates in the subconscious mind of the person gathering the EVP. Of course, there are the familiar counter-arguments. The person gathering the EVP may be a strong believer, at least in the possibility or probability, that EVP is from the a discarnate spirit. Therefore, to protect the ego, and the conscious mind, the subconscious alters the signal to be recorded, to sound different from the gatherer's voice, to prevent guilt or sense of failure if the voice did sound like the EVP gatherer's voice, and thus proving the voice originated from within, as opposed to from a discarnate spirit. The mind can go to great lengths to protect itself, including temporary or permanent blocking of access to information gathered in a traumatic incident. The witness "saw it", but remembers nothing. This type of event, say witnessing a death, is far more traumatic then EVP gathering. But the parallels are often drawn in an effort to deny the existance of EVP, or explain it away. The explanations are often so convoluted, as to be even more incredible that the event it purports to deny. I admit that not all explanations ARE, in fact, simple and straight forward, but we haven't thrown Occum's Razor in the trash can yet.

Paranormal is fascinating, and I believe that aspect of "wanting to know", is what attracts many investigators and researchers, even though, after thousands of years, there are no Ultimate Truths. Patterns, modes, probabilities, recurring events, happen. So, why? That's the Holy Grail. Why? How? W/O seeking, no answers will be found, except possibly by blind luck, total accident.
As far as the subconscious mind imprinting tape, it's one theory, and can't be ruled out. Even if EVP should ultimately be proven (?) to be a spirit voice, could we argue that imprinting is impossible, and never happens? The are many causes of similar events. Could be w/ EVP, also. I feel the same w/ saying 100% of all EVP is imprint. Many, over the years, contain data unknown, even in the subconscious, of the EVP gatherer. We might argue that someone knew the Hidden Info, and telepathically sent it to the person gathering the EVP, etc, and ad nauseum. Pretty soon, the explanations get far too complicated, and statistically improbable.
I still go back to the position that asking is the best way to get an answer: research, compiling, analysis, correlation.
As far as denial, what's total acceptance? Neither has a science basis, and each individual has choices for his/her own life, and these will change over the years. The status quo, positive or negative, is blind acceptance. If that's all a person wants or needs, so be it. Personally. I don't think that any people (city, society, culture) can exist by total acceptance of a status quo. Some where, some when, somebody will become dissatisfied, and actually create a new Original Sin, called Making A Decision. Then change will occur. There goes the status quo, and before you know it, along comes the burden of progress, and, heaven forbid, New Knowledge.

I would not argue the point that prisons could be a breeding ground for negativity, at any level. And, we can't argue that we are all fair game for temptations, or testing. As to any given individual(s), your question would be a tough call, Monday-Morning-Quarterbacking from a distance. Could they be just jerks, possibly, and they face tremendous job-related stresses and risks. Could be a bad form of a release valve, venting at you for taking a public stance. It's your hat, and if the job doesn't prohibit the stance on duty, wear it and don't worry. "It's a symbol of my faith, and the direction I've chosen for my life". The opinion of others doen't really matter. It's your life, your faith, live it accordingly. I'll best many of the jerks, inside, wish they had your courage and commitment.
Brad, you're also exposed. Anything additional?

Toby _ You mentioned that at one time, you had questions you did not want to "public post", and that's very understandable. Everyone has aspects of their life they don't want in the public. ANYTIME that you, or any one else, has questions or circumstances that you/they would like help with, 100% confidentiality, please contact me at paronormalis@aol.com, and I will do my best. No one has 100% guaranteed answers to paranormal questions, but at least we can explore the possibilities of what is happening.

Hi, Toby. Thake care of yourself out there in the sand. Thanks for letting us know that the activity is just "background" now. Generally, the most "harmful" aspect is that activity represents an "unknown", it happens in our homes where we want to relax and feel secure, it makes us ask "Am I crazy?", and it's generally not subject to "control". At least, not in the sense one might subdue and cuff a belligerent drunk. And that "proof" thing is the Holy Grail we all do search for, every investigation. It's just called Truth, and, not to totally get all cliched up, it can be stranger than fiction. Keep us posted out how things are going on, over there in the sand.

RE: Spirit attachment to a location. From some personal observations and thinking, I would add another aspect of "attachment" that is not THE answer, but could be part of the general package. I have noticed this in myself, and others as they approach older age. (I'm 60 as I write this, and have until July of next year to hold that distinction. And I would add this as a generality, not a universal phenomenon.
When I was younger, I enjoyed travel, visiting new places, even if only to say, "been there". It was an adventure, most coveted and enjoyed. And, I never stayed anywhere, in any place very long. Constantly on the go. At first, I only dropped the mental desire for distant travel, then general/regional travel. I would go, if necessary, but the personal push to do so wasn't there any more. It was simply a necessity, but not a real joy any more. As I aged, I noticed my world shrank. I'm not lazy, nor known to procrastinate. Now, at 7:00 PM, unless called out to work or other REAL reason, I tend not to want to go to Wal-Mart, grocery store, or casual trip across town. I will, but the desire, have to do it, is not really there. I notice that others, as they age, also become more of what we call "home-bodies". Perhaps clinging to home is a natural part of the aging process. Our last fortess. So, if we say a spirit is clinging to a particular home, or spot, are they really?? May we not speculate, based on what we can see in others that are aging, that perhaps the attachment may have actually been formed prior to bodily death?? The spirit might be simply following a natural progression to a centralization that is a basic part of human nature, at least for some, and the aging process?

In general theory, when a spirit departs the body, it is thought the spirit retains its basic personality, which is unique. In the event of a suicide, there may be many after-thoughts, all speculation by us. "Deep regrets of my actions. / I'm okay / I wish I could tell you ______. / Sorry to have left you like this with the guilt. etc." So, there could be "unfinished business", also a general theory. Logical thinking, the site of the suicide, etc., would be a place friends/relatives would visit, and where, hopefully the message could be delivered.
We hear similar testimony from the living about places not only of suicide, but trauma, murders, or even natural death. As far as the spirit visiting other locations, personally, I think it's quite possible. In the hours following death, there have been reported instances of the death apparition appearing to relatives, during the same night, in many locations, hundreds if not thousands of miles apart.
Again, personally, I don't think that there is a binding force, of light or darkness, that "binds" the spirit to a given death site. There are also too many case studies of "message delivered" / "mission accomplished" where the site suddenly becomes "cleared", and the activity ceases. I believe it's choice. We believe we have freedom of choice, and I generally follow that theory even when the choice seems difficult, but we also need to face the fact, that we are often our own harshest task master, and perhaps at our harshest, when we feel we have failed.
Any comments or other opinions invited.

I'm cold natured. On cold nights, my guest pulls the comforter off, and stacks it in the corner across the room, so I won't think it accidentally fell off. It wants the proper credit for its actions.
